Watermelon Sculpture by Saxton Freymann

When author Saxton Freymann isn’t writing children’s books, he spends his time carving twisted images out of bread, fruits and vegetables for inspiration. It is amazing what one can accomplish with a knife, edibles and incredible imagination. For more delightful concoctions pick up one of his many books such as, ‘How Are You Peeling?’ and ‘Play With Your Food.’

- Get a seedless watermelon and slice it in a circular motion. Try to keep the slice round and smooth.
- Cut the tip of a banana about 1 inch thick. Then cut two circular slices of the banana from the same end.
- Now slice the banana in a curve shape about 2-3 inches long.
- Dip the banana pieces in lemon juice to keep them from discoloring.
- Place the two circular pieces equal distance apart on the watermelon. This represents the eyes.
- Place the pointed ban nana slice in the center about 1 inch below the two circular pieces to represent the nose.
- Place the curved piece in the center about 1 inch below the “nose” to represent the mouth.

Voila! You now have a funny face using a seedless watermelon and bananas.
